From 01.04.2023, we recruit

PhD students (m/f/d)
within the Research Training Group 2561
"MatCom-ComMat: Materials Compounds from
Composite Materials for Applications in Extreme Conditions"

with background in materials science, mechanical or chemical engineering, or physics/chemistry

Become a member of the DECHEMA research institute, a non-profit foundation based in Frankfurt am Main in Germany.
We carry out fundamental and applied research in the field of Materials, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology.

The Research Training Group (RTG 2561) MatCom-ComMat: Materials Compounds from Composite Materials for Applications in Extreme Conditions is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) since April 2020. Starting with the 2nd cohort in April 2023 we offer two PhD positions at the Dechema Research Institute in Frankfurt, along with up to 10 more at our partners Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Technical University Darmstadt (TUDa).

This position is first limited to a duration of 3 years

Kennziffer 50060

Your tasks:

  • The scope of the work relates to the development, characterization and modelling of novel, revolutionary multi-phase composite systems capable of withstanding temperatures substantially beyond 1300 °C and harsh environmental conditions (e.g., oxidative, corrosive, erosive atmospheres) as far as mechanical behaviour, environmental resistance and durability are concerned
  • This is achieved by a materials combination consisting of metallic/intermetallic alloys based on refractory metals as substrates and polymer-derived ceramic nanocomposites based on Si(Metal)CON

We expect:

  • Successful candidates should have completed their master studies in the fields of materials science, mechanical or chemical engineering, or physics/chemistry
  • Candidates from closely related fields are also welcome. The doctoral researchers will be supervised / trained by teams of highly qualified scientists amongst the three institutions
  • Ability to work in a team and enthusiasm for independent scientific-experimental work is a must
  • stays abroad at internationally known academic institutions are encouraged

We offer:

  • Unique opportunity to actively contribute to an exciting but also very challenging research project within an experienced scientist team
  • Very well-equipped laboratories for cell fabrication on laboratory scale as well as electrochemical and physical material characterization
  • Adequate financial remuneration and 30 holly days per year
  • Attractive working conditions in a cosmopolitan German city
